More Holiday Happenings...

We had lots of fun things going on this last holiday season (see part 1 here)!

I celebrated my 23rd birthday.  It was a great one!

We attended two Ugly Christmas Sweater Parties!  One at the Allen home, where we played Minute-to-Win-It games and had some yummy snacks.  The other was at the Whiting home where we had a really cool hot chocolate bar with some yummy food as well (to see more of that party, go here).

Tacky never looked so good...eh?!

Christmas Eve Dinner with the Clark side of the family...

Landon got to be baby Jesus...so by default we were Mary and Joseph!

Didn't you know, baby Jesus sucked his thumb?!

On New Year's Eve, we hung out with Aubrey and Thomas.  We let off the flying lanterns and sipped bubbly at midnight (I need to get pics from her, they got a nice new camera for Christmas that we used that night!).  The next day, we ate breakfast at their house and then went out to the desert to go shooting.  Unfortunately, we couldn't find anywhere to "legally" shoot.  We need to do more research before we head out of town next time!

He makes me swoon in his flannel shirt and vest.  Love my little outdoors man!

Expecting baby girl Whiting here at the end of January!

Thomas and Aubrey with cute Sasha!

We tried the Moby on Dad and went on some walks around the neighborhood (we tightened up the Moby a bit after this, it is hard to tie it on someone else when I can't feel how it is fitting them).

We have tried to stay warm in our pajamas when we hang out at home watching movies!

Happenings...

Just a little catch up on what we've been up to!
This is a little past due, but the end of October we celebrated Brett's 26th birthday.  Oh how I love that man!  He is a wonderful husband and the best dad!  Landon and I met him for lunch at his favorite pizza place, Grimaldi's.  That evening we left Landon with his Grandma and Grandpa Brown to go grab a bite to eat at Joe's BBQ and a free dessert at Liberty Marketplace.  The Sunday before, we celebrated with my family, and he requested a Texas Sheet Cake, his usual treat of choice.

I have also been knitting quite a bit, trying to bulk up my etsy shop inventory, which can be challenging with a baby!  And I promised myself when I opened the shop, that I would still do some crafting and creating for fun, or else it wouldn't be worth it.  So, I knitted Landon a little hat to wear.

Here he is sporting it at dad's softball games!

Thanksgiving week was jam-packed with lots of family time.  Brett and I were hardly even home the last half of the week!  I will have to do a separate post on that.  But it was indeed a great time (with lots of good food, too!).  Saturday night, the adults went out to dinner and bowling.  Bowling was older siblings vs. younger siblings, and it was a blast!  We each won a game!

Melanie gave her team a pep talk the second game, and it turned out that it helped--they won!

At the tail end of that weekend, we were able to bless our sweet boy.
It was a beautiful and simple blessing,
and he slept through the whole thing!

A yearly tradition on the Allred side of the family is for the cousins to draw names for a gift exchange.  This year, Landon has his cute little 6 year old cousin Morgan.  We (mostly me, but Brett agreed to help!) have an idea up our sleeve for her gift, and we have to stay in the $10-$15 range.  Here are a couple things we are using to pull it off.  It is in the works now, and I think it will turn out pretty awesome!  Stay tuned!

Landon: A Birth Story

This is a lengthier and wordier post than most of my other entries.
I wanted to remember this experience, so this is my "journal" entry for Landon's birth story.
Feel free to read on, there are some cute pictures at the end!

I had been having contractions for the last couple weeks.  I'd have them for several hours, then they'd dissipate.  They weren't super painful, but definitely noticeable.

As Brett and I crawled into bed late on the evening of September 11th, I felt a few more contractions that were a little more intense.  But nothing that didn't keep me from drifting off to sleep a few minutes later.

The morning of Wednesday September 12th, I woke up around 6:20 with some contractions that were more intense.  I hopped in a hot shower and ate some breakfast.  Then I went back to bed for a little while.  The contractions continued sporatically, but they seemed just like the Braxton-Hicks I'd had before.  I went to my doctor's appointment at 10:40 am, she stripped my membranes.  I was dilated over a 3 and close to 90% effaced.  She told me that I would most likely have the baby in a day or two, but I wasn't really sure.  I stopped at McDonald's and treated myself to a dipped ice cream cone.

I spent the afternoon at my mom's house--chatting, and hanging out.  My contractions were definitely regular now, but I thought that they'd dwindle in a few hours.  Just slightly more intense, but nothing that I couldn't walk or talk through, I hardly even focused on them.  After a couple hours, I started glancing at the clock, it seemed my contractions were about 5 minutes apart.

I headed home and relaxed for a little while until Brett got home from work.  I took Cubby for a walk around the neighborhood, chatted with a ward member in her front yard, did the irrigation.  Brett got home and ran to a quick meeting, I put in a load of laundry and took a hot bath.

By the time Brett got home, the contractions were more intense, I was starting to feel a lot of pain.  But I was nervous they would turn me down, I wasn't really convinced I was in labor.  Brett felt confident that they would keep me there, and that I was in fact--in labor.  After a little longer, I told Brett that we should just go, I was starting to hurt pretty good.

We loaded up the car with the carseat, our hospital bag, the diaper bag, and made our way down the freeway.  Of course the parking lot was packed.  Brett dropped me off in the front while he parked the car.  I paced the sidewalk during contractions, trying to dull the pain.  Brett came jogging up and we made our way into the maternity ward.

They sent me to a triage room, told me to "gown up" and wait for them to check on me.  My contractions were a minute to a minute and a half apart by now, I was hurting.  Those gowns are ridiculous, it's impossible to figure out how to snap up the shoulder.  Brett was trying to help me, I told him to stop, I was past caring.  He still cared though, and snapped me up.  We laugh about it now, but I didn't think it was very funny then.

The nurse came in, strapped on the monitors.  "Wow, you are having regular contractions.  You are doing so good breathing through them."  I was dilated to a 5.

"You mean, I get to stay?"

"Yes, we'll admit you now.  Were you wanting anything for pain?"

I turned to Brett and smiled, "I am in labor, they'll keep me!"

Then I turned to the nurse, "Yes, I'd like an epidural, when can I get one?"

She told me I could get one in about 20 minutes, as soon as I'd finished the bag of IV fluids.  She left to prep my room and call anesthesia.  I moved to the delivery room.  I got my epidural.  The anesthesiologist hadn't even left and I was already smiling.  I couldn't believe how good I felt now.  I felt like having a baby was manageable, like I could do it.

Brett went out to the car to get some of our things.  I texted back and forth with our good friend, Kelly, who was working in postpartum upstairs, awaiting my arrival--hopefully on her shift!  Brett came back and turned on a movie, and we just decided to hunker down, first babies take a long time to come.

The nurse came to check me, I was at an 8 and she was shocked.  She told me he might be here soon.  My sisters said they'd be coming soon and were leaving their house in just a few minutes.

My water broke.

The nurse came in a few minutes later and said it was time to try a "practice push".  After just one, she said we'd better stop, she needed to let the doctor know how close I was.  Just a minute later, she came back in and said it was time to start pushing!  Brett wasn't even very far into his movie yet...but he paused it :)

It was just minutes after midnight, I started the pushing.  After just a couple, the nurse ran to get the doctor.  Nurses came in, the doctor arrived, and all were in awe this was my first baby.

Just a few more pushes and baby Landon arrived at 12:14 am.  They layed him on my chest, he was perfect.  I couldn't believe I was holding my son!  Then I handed him to Brett.  He was beaming.  Then he got "initiated" into fatherhood and had some urine running down his arm in a matter of seconds.  We all had a good giggle.  They whisked him away to be weighed and measured.

6 pounds, 5 ounces
19.5 inches long

He was beautiful.  Hardly swollen, and just precious.  Family who was on their way for the birth flooded in the room.  Unfortunately, they missed it.  But thankfully, he was here.

Soon they took us up to our recovery room.  Kelly came to visit, she took Landon to the nursery for his first bath.  The middle of the night quickly turned into the morning.  It was daytime, shift changes were happening, and we were in a sleep-deprived heaven.

We came home, Friday September 14th, during the late afternoon.

He is already back up to his birthweight--eating like a champ (just like his daddy!).
He is taking a pacifier, and is still not too thrilled about bathtime.
He has already been on a few "walks" around the neighborhood.
And we love when we catch him smirking in his sleep.

We are so smitten and so in love.

They were like this for minutes, just the two of them looking at each other.  Sweet moments of father and son getting to know each other.

Traditions: Two This Week

So to continue on with some traditions I love,
here are two simple ones that I took part in this week.
And they both happen to be traditions that my grandmas have started!

The first one, is something my Grandma Clark does every Christmas.
She has a basket of popcorn balls near her tree.
Every time we visit, we get a yummy treat too!
So I whipped some up the other night for our house.

And it was my birthday this week, and as a tradition, my Grandma Brown
always calls (and leaves a message if we can't answer) of her playing her
beautiful rendition of "Happy Birthday" on the piano as she sings along.
It always is fun to pick up the phone and hear that on the other end!

They are simple traditions but I love them, they still make special moments.

Here's the popcorn ball recipe I use, in case you want to whip up a batch or two for yourself.

Popcorn Balls
Place 1/2 cup of unpopped kernels in a popcorn air-popper.
Sift out unpopped kernels out of the bottom when finished popping.

1 cube butter
1 cup sugar
2/3 cup light/white corn syrup
1 tsp. vanilla
(salt to taste)

Bring to a boil.
Bring to a rolling boil and boil for 45 seconds-1 minute (stirring constantly).
Pour over popped popcorn and stir to coat evenly.
Let sit for a few minutes, for carmel to thicken on the popcorn.
Shape into balls, place on wax paper to set.
Put in small plastic bags and tie with ribbon/yarn.

That's it!  I made smaller sized balls, and I made two batches so my basket would be full.
Make sure to add a little salt, it makes a huge difference!

Brett's Birthday Weekend in Sedona

Remember this post?  Brett and I had a blast staying in a cabin-for-two in Sedona.  Seriously, we would recommend this adorable bed-and-breakfast to anyone!  They are called the Canyon Wren Cabins, check them out!  And if you don't believe us, look at TripAdvisor, they have phenomenal reviews!

We drove up early Friday evening (we stayed in the Honeysuckle Cabin) and grilled our own steaks, had baked potatoes, steamed veggies, and Brett's favorite Strawberry-Lime Jones Soda.  Topped off dinner with Sprinkles cupcakes (lit with candles of course!).  We watched a movie on Brett's laptop, and just chatted and relaxed in front of the fireplace.

Saturday morning we woke up and had a delicious breakfast.  Then we were headed off onto a beautiful hike (of course I forgot my camera!  But we took a few on Brett's phone).  The hike was gorgeous.

That afternoon we napped, relaxed, and watched a movie.

We hit a cozy Italian Restaurant that is frequented by the locals.  Complete with some live music and candles, it was a delicious recommendation by our hosts.  After dinner we walked through Uptown Sedona, and bought a souvenir.  Then we went back to the cabin, started up a fire in the fireplace, drank hot chocolate, made s'mores, and played speed scrabble.

This is the life!

S'mores!

What a goofball!  Haha!

We had a wonderful time together, and it is amazing how much fun you can have when the TV and the internet aren't even an option!

Good Weather is Here!

And the good weather calls for:

Homemade soup in delicious bread bowls (left over from the Halloween party--thanks Aubrey!)

Going "old school" on my morning run--gotta stay warm!

The best birthday present ever!  Brett and I got these from my parents...
they were waiting in our house when we got home from Sedona
and we are loving them!

Since we have our new bikes, Brett has been going to the local parks to shoot hoops.
The other night he let me tag along, and this guy asked Brett to play one-on-one.
Brett beat him 10-0.
It was awesome!
And the guy kept yelling out "This white boy can play!" and "Man, do you live on the court?"
It was a proud moment for me!

My Birthday Boy

Today is Brett's 25th birthday!  I feel so blessed to be married to such a wonderful man.  He takes such great care of me, he shows me unconditional love, he is a great example to me.  He is my best friend, my sounding board, my voice of reason, my snuggler, my comedian, my love!  Here are just a few fun photos of my sweetheart throughout his life...

What an adorable baby he was!

He always has been an athlete

Best buds with his brothers
